AI and Machine Learning are revolutionizing healthcare.

In this episode, we explore three papers that demonstrate the application of these cutting-edge tools in healthcare, hosted by Fabrizio Billi, Ph.D. (UCLA) with Panelists: Gavin Pereira, MD (UC Davis Health), Thomas Peterson, Ph.D. (UCSF), and Alan Young, MD(McKinsey & Company).

The first paper focuses on the use of machine learning and autonomous actions for surgical decision-making. It highlights the potential benefits, including reduced clinician burden and automated processes. However, the paper also acknowledges the challenges of developing AI models, such as addressing bias. The other two papers center around chatbots in healthcare. One evaluates the successful performance of ChatGPT in responding to mental health vignettes, while the other automates a chatbot for patient-provider communication. However, one paper reveals that the chatbot falls short and was found to address less than one-third of patient questions, emphasizing the need for improvement in its capabilities.

While AI and Machine Learning offer great potential benefits for healthcare, it’s crucial to recognize their limitations and the ongoing need for further development and refinement. Discover the evolving landscape of AI and Machine Learning in healthcare in this episode!
